Breanna Lanceleve and Hunter Garlent named top athletes

The 2017/18 varsity season came to a close last night at the annual awards celebration held on campus at the Loyola Conference Hall.  

Breanna Lanaceleve and Hunter Garlent, both from hockey were named the top athletes and below is a listing of all our major award winners and team MVP's. 

 

Female Athlete – Breanna Lanceleve (Hockey)

Fifth-year forward, Breanna Lancelve, ends her career as the most decorated women's hockey player to wear the Saint Mary's jersey.  She is a 4-time AUS All-Star, has lead team scoring in all 5 seasons, this season was named the conference Most Sportsmanlike Player, is a 3-time U Sport 2nd team All-Canadian, and has worn the "C" for the team for the past 4 seasons. 

Male Athlete - Hunter Garlent (Hockey)

In only his 2nd season, Hunter had another outstanding performance in one of the most competitive conferences in Canada.  He led team scoring with 41 points, good for 3rd in the AUS, logs an incredible amount of ice time, is a conference 1st team All-Star and a 1st team U Sport All-Canadian.  Hunter is a very skilled dynamic player that gives his team a chance to win each night.  

Female Rookie – Marissa MacAulay (Volleyball)

Marissa, a first-year setter from Truro, competed in all 20-regular season matches, including playoffs.  She was 2nd in team assists and assists/game, she finished 5th in league rookie voting and is on stride to do great things in her role as setter for the Huskies. 

Male Rookie – Nikita Kasongo (Basketball)

Nikita was recently named the country's top rookie.  This 6-foot-4 guard from Montreal, Que., started in all 20 of the Huskies' regular season games.  He led all freshman scorers, averaging 18.9 points per game, good for fifth overall in the AUS conference and second in team scoring, behind teammate Kemar Alleyne.  He averaged 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

President's Award (F) – Maddie Clarke (Volleyball)

For the third year in a row, this student-athlete has been on the very top of academic achievement.  A 4th year science student with a perfect 4.30 GPA, volleyball left side, Maddie played in all 20 regular matches, was 3rd in conference hitting %, first in team digs, 3rd in team kills and was named a 2nd team AUS All-star. 

President's Award (M) -  Nicholas Bartolacci (Football) A 4th year student from Halifax, NS, Nick is a 2 time Academic All-Canadian, team captain and recipient of the Dick MacLean Scholarship Award.  This student-athlete took on an impressive leadership role this season and is a true Santamarian.  Bartolacci anchored the #1 offense in the AUS and will represent SMU in the upcoming 2017 CFL combine.
