Huskies announce hiring of Mikayla Nassy-Wong as full-time Sport Coordinator

Saint Mary's University Athletics & Recreation Department is proud to announce that Mikayla Nassy-Wong has been named to the role of Sport Coordinator of Athletics & Recreation.

As the Sport Coordinator of Athletics & Recreation, Mikayla will provide support to both varsity and club sport teams at Saint Mary's University. She will be responsible for the planning and execution of varsity sport home games, including overseeing all game day staff and coordinating with visiting teams and officials. She will also be responsible for overseeing club sports, and assist with scheduling, ticket management and marketing, communications, and special events.

Originally from Toronto, Ontario, Mikayla comes to the Huskies from local soccer club Suburban FC, where as Club Manager, she handled the day-to-day operations for the club. While at Suburban, Mikayla also coached the U13 Academy girls' program.

Mikayla has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with honours from Upper Iowa University, and a Master of Science in Education in Sport Performance and Leadership from Northern State University.

An accomplished athlete, Mikayla played NCAA soccer at Upper Iowa University, where she received conference academic and athletic honours before suffering a career ending injury during her junior year. She also received the opportunity to take part in the NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar in 2019, and the NCAA Career in Sports Forum in 2017, both at the NCAA head office.

After her injury, Mikayla transitioned into the operations side of sport, working in the athletic department at NCAA DII Northern State University, where she worked for two years as the Graduate Assistant in Athletic Compliance, handling eligibility and compliance rules and education for the department, as well as being the sport administrator for multiple sports such as women's soccer, volleyball and softball. She also served as the Assistant Coordinator for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Life Skill program.

She's also a passionate coach, having coached local soccer during her time in the States with the Dakota ODP program, where she identified young talent in North and South Dakota, and will continue to coach with Suburban FC in her free time.

"I am very excited to enter the world of university athletics here in Canada and couldn't be happier for my journey to begin at SMU," says Mikayla. "As a newcomer to Atlantic Canada, I am keen to see the talent and coaching level we have here and am eager to help make SMU a premiere destination for athletics on the East Coast."

"We are thrilled to welcome Mikayla to the Saint Mary's family. Mikayla has a wealth of experience in the world of varsity athletics, as a player, coach and administrator, and her skills will help enhance the game-day experience and coordination at Saint Mary's," said Scott Gray, Director of Athletics & Recreation.

Mikayla began her position at Saint Mary's on December 6, and can be reached at mikayla.nassy-wong@smu.ca.
