Diggs, Demale named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Feb. 13-19, 2023

Men's basketball guard Jayrell Diggs and women's hockey forward Shae Demale have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week of Feb. 13-19, 2023.

Jayrell Diggs, a second year guard from East Preston, NS, is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 13-19, 2023.

Over a pair of games this weekend, Diggs averaged 21.5 points per game, including shooting 46% from the field, 39% from three and 86% from the free-throw line, along with 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

In Friday's loss to the Cape Breton Capers, Diggs led the Huskies with 20 points, including shooting 3/6 from three and 5/5 from the free-throw line, and added six assists, four rebounds and two steals.

In Saturday's loss to the St. FX X-Men, Diggs again led the Huskies in scoring with 23 points, and added seven rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Diggs finished the season as the Huskies leading scorer, and fourth in the AUS with 18.7 points per game. He was also among the conference leaders in minutes per game (34.1, 3rd) three-pointers made (49, 4th), free-throws made (71, 7th), free-throw percentage (82.6, 8th)

Shae Demale, a fourth year forward from Red Deer, AB, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 13-19, 2023.

In three games against the Moncton Aigles Bleues, Demale recorded six points (four goals, two assists), 19 shots on goal and a +4 plus/minus.

In Tuesday's 3-1 game one victory, Demale contributed to all three goals, including assisting on Miranda Hatt's game-winning goal, and icing the game with an empty net marker. She was a +1 with three shots on goal.

In Thursday's 4-2 game two loss, Demale scored a third period goal to cut the Aigles Bleues lead to 3-2. She was a +1 with eight shots on goal.

In Saturday's 3-2 game three win, Demale scored twice, including the series-winning goal in double overtime. She was a +2 with eight shots on goal.

Entering the AUS semifinals, Demale leads the playoffs in points (6), goals (4), plus/minus (+4), and game-winning goals (1).

Demale and the Huskies will now take on the St. FX X-Women in the AUS Semifinal. The best-of-five series will begin in Antigonish, N.S. on Wednesday and Thursday, before shifting to Halifax for game three on Sunday, Feb. 26. GET TICKETS
