McGarvey, Beggs named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Oct. 23-29, 2023

Men's cross country runner Rory McGarvey and women's hockey/cross country athlete Mackenzie Beggs have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending October 29, 2023.

Rory McGarvey, a third year cross country runner from Belleville, ON, is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week ending October 29, 2023.

At Saturday's Atlantic University Sport cross country championship, McGarvey finished seventh overall, helping lead the Huskies to a fourth place team finish. McGarvey's seventh place finish earned him First Team AUS All-Star honours.

McGarvey was then named the 2023 AUS Men's Cross Country Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner. The captain of Huskies men's cross country, McGarvey boasts a 4.23 cumulative GPA, and is a two-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian. His community work includes having served as a volunteer for the 2023 CIBC Run for the Cure, as well as serving on campus as vice president of the Saint Mary's University Geography Society and volunteering with the university's Environmental Society.

McGarvey will now prepare to compete at the U SPORTS cross country national championship, taking place Sunday, November, 12,, at Thames Valley Golf Course in London, ON, hosted by the Western University Mustangs.

Mackenzie Beggs, a second year hockey forward and cross country runner from Kemptville, ON, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week ending October 29, 2023.

Beggs suited up for the Huskies women's hockey team in a pair of games - a 5-2 loss at Moncton on Wednesday, and a 4-2 win at Mount Allison on Friday night - recording two shots on goal and winning 11 face-offs over the two games.

On Saturday morning, Beggs made her debut as a member of the Huskies women's cross country team at the 2023 AUS Cross Country Championships and ran to a team-best 41st place finish with a time of 36:28.

Beggs and the Huskies women's hockey team will be back in action this week, visiting STFX on Friday, before hosting Dalhousie on Saturday.
