Smith, Buffie named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Feb. 5 - 11, 2024

Men's track and field athlete Chad Smith and women's hockey forward Charlotte Buffie have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending February 11, 2024.

Chad Smith, a first year sprinter from Halifax, NS is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 5-11, 2024.

At Saturday's SMU Huskies Open Meet, Smith won the 60m with a new personal best of 6.98 seconds, ranking second in the AUS. He also was a member of the Huskies men's 4x200m relay team, teaming with Jaiden Williams, Oliver Gavel and Innis MacMullin to take the win and set a new Saint Mary's record with a time of 1:31.88, ranking first in the AUS standings and 13th in U SPORTS.

Smith has won the 60m at four different meets this season - SMU OpenAthletics NS Indoor Open, UNB REDS Invitational, Moncton Open - improving upon his personal best time at each competition.

"We're absolutely thrilled with Chad's progression throughout the season, he's improved every weekend and we're looking forward to him competing at the AUS Track & Field Championships in two weeks," says Huskies Track & Field head coach Kevin Heisler.

Smith and the Huskies will compete at the 2024 Atlantic University Sports Track & Field Championship, hosted by Université de Moncton Feb. 23-24 in Moncton, N.B.

Charlotte Buffie, a first year forward from Winnipeg, MB, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 5-11, 2024.

In Saturday's 7-0 over the Mount Allison Mounties, Buffie led the Huskies with two goals and two assists.

Buffie also had a strong game in the Huskies 5-4 comeback win over STFX on Friday, creating several offensive chances and playing very well defensively. 

For the season, Buffie has recorded 17 points (seven goals and 10 assists) in 28 games played. The Huskies head into the AUS Playoffs as the #3 seed, and will host the Dalhousie Tigers for a crosstown showdown in the AUS Quarterfinal, with Game One being played Wednesday, Feb. 14 at the Dauphinee Centre.
