Huskies student-athletes raise nearly $23,000 for Special Olympics in annual Motionball Marathon of Sport

Over 120 Huskies student-athletes helped fundraise nearly $23,000 for Special Olympics Canada through this year's Motionball Marathon of Sport event.

On Thursday, March 21, over 120 Huskies varsity athletes and 18 local Special Olympians came together at the Saint Mary's University Homburg Centre for a fun night of competition and friendship for a great cause.

"The reason I care so much about this cause is that I believe no one should be prevented from competing in sports, everyone should be given a chance, which is why I love this organization so much, it gives everyone a chance to play and have fun," says Huskies rugby player Lauren Young, who was the top individual fundraiser with $1,070 raised in donations.

"It's really fun and you get to actually meet the people that you are helping and raising money for. I know many of the Special Olympians wants to stay in contact and come out and watch our games throughout the season, so it just builds those connections and motivates everyone to be better," continued Young.

Across Canada, 28 different universities held Motionball events this week, with Saint Mary's among the top fundraising schools, raising a total of $22,973 for Special Olympics Canada.

"It's just a great event. I feel like as a student-athlete, we have a duty to give back to our community and the Special Olympians in the area," says Huskies basketball player Jonah Crowther. "Just meeting the Special Olympians, getting to know them, it's a competitive night but at the end of the day it's all about just having a good time."

"We've got a lot of athletes here that are really passionate about sports, and this event allows us to play with them, and everyone to connect and have a great time," added Conrad Scotchburn, who helped organize the event.
