Mounties grind out win vs Huskies

The Mount Allison Mounties took a hard-fought win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in front of a raucous home crowd in week 3 of action in the AUS.

Mount Allison's defensive unit was instrumental in helping the team pick up a 10-6 win over the Huskies, limiting SMU to 171 total yards of offence and registering four sacks on the day.

Saint Mary's defensive unit also came up big creating five turnovers on Saturday afternoon. They forced three fumbles on the day that were all recovered and add two interceptions.

Mounties were led offensively by first-year standout Nolan Cheeseman (Upper Tantallon, NS) with his nine catches for 73 yards, he also added 27 kick return yards. Quarterback CJ Valenti (Terrebonne, QC) bounced back from two interceptions to finish 15-for-24 for 127 yards in the air.

Huskies' offence was led by their running game as Malik Williams (Maple Creek, SK) and Teon Alexander-Amour (Vancouver, BC) had 47 and 37 yards respectively. Fourth-year quarterback Duncan Patterson (Bedford, NS) once again proved his toughness shaking off big hits and go 11-for-22 for 83 yards. Saint Mary's kicker and punter Ethan Nagler (Winnipeg, MB) was good from 12 and 41 yards to register six points.

Mount Allison's Special Teams group once again produced points this week with a massive fake field goal pass by Justin Vogels (Sackville, NB) for a 32-yard score in the 2nd half to Subway Player of the Game Lucas Cormier (Sackville, NB). This would be the game's only touchdown.

Subway Player of the Game Lucas Cormier has 5.5 tackles and a touchdown reception.

Mount Allison is on the road next week to take on the Acadia Axemen on September 17 for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

Saint Mary's has a bye in week 4 and will next see action as they host Bishop's on September 24 for a 3 p.m. tilt.
