Three Huskies selected to participate in 2024 U SPORTS East-West Bowl

Three members of the Saint Mary's Huskies football team - defensive back Ryan Butler, wide receiver Trydell Mintis, and running back Malik Williams - have been selected to participate in the 2024 U SPORTS East-West Bowl, scheduled to be played May 11 in Waterloo, ON.

Ryan Butler, a third year defensive back out of Mississauga, ON, recorded 22 total tackles, one intercetion and one pass breakup in 2024. Over three seasons with the Huskies, Butler has recorded 57 total tackles, five interceptions and five pass breakups in 21 games played. On October 19, 2022, Butler was named U SPORTS Football Defensive Player of the Week after recording five tackles and an intereception which he returned 72 yards for a touchdown in a win over the Mount Allison Mounties.

Trydell Mintis, a third year wide receiver out of Halifax, NS, led the Huskies with 29 receptions and four receiving touchdowns in the 2023 season, finishing second on the team with 336 receiving yards. Over three seasons with the Huskies, Mintis has recorded 42 receptions for 518 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games played.

Malik Williams, a third year running back out of Ajax, ON, was second on the Huskies with 47 rushing attempts for 180 yards in five games played during the 2023 season. Over three seasons with the Huskies, Williams has recorded 797 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 172 attempts over 18 games played, adding six receptions for 56 yards.

The University of Waterloo will host the 2024 East-West Bowl on Saturday, May 11, at 12:30 pm ET at Warrior Field.

The event features the top 100 Canadian university football players eligible for the 2025 CFL Draft as they look to showcase their skills to coaches, general managers, and personnel from the Canadian Football League. A minimum of three players in their third or fourth year from each of the 27 U SPORTS football programs will attend the game.

The event will also feature a coaches clinic on May 10 and 11 at Warriors Field.

"The Waterloo Warriors, with the support of our Athletic Department, LIT and our football program, are excited for the opportunity to host this annual weeklong all-star event," said Warriors head coach Chris Bertoia. "Our intent is for USPORTS football student-athletes and coaches to have an outstanding experience at the University of Waterloo."

The head coaches of the 2023 Vanier Cup finalists will lead the teams. Marco Iadeluca, bench boss of the Vanier Cup Champion Université de Montréal Carabins, oversees Team East, while Blake Nill, head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds, guides Team West.

General admission grandstand tickets are $12.00 for Adults, $8.00 for Youth (6-12) and non-University of Waterloo students, $5.00 for Children 5 and under. Admission for University of Waterloo students is free with a valid WatCard.

East-West Bowl Coaches Clinic

The 2024 East-West Bowl Coaches Clinic takes place May 10 and 11 at Warriors Field. Amateur football coaches are invited to attend the event led by U SPORTS coaches from across the country, who will make presentations on leadership, player positional skill development, rules, officiating, team culture, and offensive/defensive systems.

The clinic will consist of on-field Indy drill demonstrations from current East-West Bowl players, classroom sessions, and informal chalk talks.

  • Individual Coach: $75 + HST (includes Clinic Sessions, one Game ticket to East-West Bowl, and pre-game lunch).
  • Coaching Staff (4 Coaches from same staff) - $240 + HST (includes Clinic Sessions, 6 Game tickets to East-West Bowl and 6 pre-game lunches).
