SMU get 2nd win over MUN

(HALIFAX, N.S.)--The SMU Huskies defeated the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks 91-90 on Sunday afternoon in AUS men's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

 

Trailing 89-90, SMU's Achuil Lual (Ottawa, ON) drained two foul shots with 0.4 seconds left to gave the Huskies the 91-90 win.

 

Saint Mary's improves to 10-6 (28 points) and sits alone in third place, four points up on 8-8 Dal and 9-8 CBU and four points behind second place 12-4 UNB.

 

Memorial drops to 5-11 (14 points) and sits in sixth place in AUS standings.

 

SMU held leads of 27-24 after 10 minutes and 50-46 at the half.

 

Memorial jumped out for a 25-18 third quarter run and led 71-68 after 30 minutes.

 

An eventful fourth quarter saw SMU outscore the Sea-Hawks 23-19 down the stretch for the 91-90 win.

 

Caleb Gould (Aurora, ON) led the Sea-Hawks with 30 points while teammate Vasilije Curcic (Kragujevac, Serbia) had 29 points in the losing effort.

 

Marquis Clayton (Halifax, NS) and Osman Barrie (Ottawa, ON) each paced the Huskies with double-doubles in the win. Clayton led all scorers with 31 points and 15 assists while Barrie chipped in 20 points and 11 rebounds.

 

Rounding out the Huskies scoring were Jeremy McAvoy (Dartmouth, NS) and Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, ON) with 10 points apiece, while Lual and Ryan Augustine (Toronto, ON) had eight points each as well.

 

Aaron Fisher (Savannah, Georgia) finished with four points while Kadeem Scott (Toronto, ON) and Brent Martindale (Kingston, ON) each had a rebound in the SMU win.

 

Saint Mary's next hosts 4-12 Acadia at 8pm Wednesday February, 11th.
