Huskies top Maine at Fort Kent 83-74 in Garland Tournament

(FREDERICTON, NB) In a battle of run-and-gun teams, the Saint Mary's Huskies beat the University of Maine-Fort Kent Bengals 83-74, Saturday, in Fredericton.

With the win, SMU improves to 2-0 at the University of New Brunswick's annual Eric Garland Tournament.

The Bengals are now 1-1.

"We started the game really sloppy," said Huskies head coach Jonah Taussig, who felt his starters weren't as sharp defensively as he wanted. "Our rookies and our bench came on in the second quarter and went on a real nice run because they were playing good D."

Marquis Clayton(Halifax, NS) and Kemar Alleyne(Scarborough, ON) each scored 14 points to lead the Huskies.

Roosevelt Smith Jr.(Fairfield, CA) scored a game high 20 points for the Bengals.

"I wanted us to battle a little harder," said Smith. "I just think we missed a couple of things we wanted to do defensively, and I think it piled up and we got down early, which also didn't help us."

Despite both sides self-professed lapses on defence, it was an entertaining game, with both teams working quickly in transition.

"We picked it up again at the start of the third quarter and kind of put the game out of reach," said Taussig. "I was really pleased with how some of our young guys played."

The Huskies complete their Garland Tournament schedule on Sunday, when they face the Bishop's Gaiters.

The Bengals take on the host UNB Varsity Reds.
