Varsity Reds top Huskies 93-92 in OT

(HALIFAX, NS)—The Saint Mary's Huskies lost a heartbreaker 93-92 on Saturday night to the visiting UNB Varsity Reds in Atlantic university sport men's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

Saint Mary's jumped out to a 30-14 lead after 10 minutes and UNB climbed back in the second quarter and outscored the Huskies 26-13 in the frame and trailed SMU 43-40 at the half.

SMU had an explosive third quarter, scoring 29 points compared to UNB's 19 in the frame and took a 72-59 cushion into the fourth quarter.

UNB outscored SMU 27-14 in the frame and tied up the game 86-86 with under two seconds left on a Jesse Kendall (Guelph, ON) last second put in off a missed three-point shot.

A slowed down overtime period saw the Varsity Reds outscore the Huskies 7-6 and took the win 93-92.

Javon Masters (Kitchener, ON) led UNB and all scorers with 35 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for the win.

Ibrahima Doumbouya (Calgary, AB) had 19 points in 29 minutes coming off the Varsity Reds' bench while Chris Spurrell (Quispamsis, NB) had 13 points.

Kendall finished with 11 points for the V-Reds who improve to 6-0 in AUS play.  

Nikita Kasongo (Montreal, QC) paced Saint Mary's with 23 points while Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, ON) and Osman Barrie (Ottawa, ON) each finished with 19 points apiece.

Barrie hauled in 14 rebounds for a double-double and Brent Martindale (Kingston, ON) had a double-double of his own—13 points and 12 rebounds—for SMU, who drop to 4-2 on the year.

Both teams wrap up their fall semester AUS schedule next week with games worth 4-points.

UNB hosts 0-4 Memorial University November 25^th and 26^th in Fredericton while SMU travels down the road to cross-town rival 4-1 Dalhousie University November 21^st.

Tip-off for all games is 8 pm.
