Huskies end pre-season with 83-77 win over UNB

(HALIFAX, N.S.)—The Saint Mary's Huskies ended their 2019 preseason with a win over the visiting UNB Reds 83-77 on Thursday night in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

UNB jumped to a 22-16 first quarter lead thanks in part to 11 points from Tyrell Leotaud.

Dontae Mitchell had eight of SMU's 25 points in the second quarter, as the Huskies outscored UNB by 10 and led 41-37 at the half.

The Red's Chris Spurrell scored seven points in nine minutes as UNB outscored SMU 21-15 in the third quarter and led 58-56 after thirty minutes.

Saint Mary's won the scoring race in the fourth 27-19, aided by Qyemah Gibson's seven points in the frame and SMU held on for the 83-77 victory.

Leotaud (Ajax, ON) and Spurrell (Quispamsis, NB) each finished with 17 points for UNB while Markus Masters (Kitchener, ON) had 16.

Sebastian Gray (Antioch, Tennessee) paced SMU with 17 points while Mitchell (Vaughan, ON) and Gibson (Nassau, Bahamas) each had 16.

Earlier in the month, The Huskies captured the Stu Aberdeen tournament hosted by Acadia University and went 1-2 in the Mickey Place tournament hosted by UPEI.

Saint Mary's opens the 2019-2020 AUS men's basketball season on the road November 1-2 versus UPEI and hosts a home-and-home series with Dalhousie—at the Tigers November 6th and home on November9th at 8 p.m.
