Huskies earn weekend sweep over Panthers

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – Johneil Johnson scored 22 points and Qyemah Gibson added 20, as SMU defeated UPEI 89-72 on Saturday night in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action.

UPEI led by two after the first quarter 19-17 as Sebastian Gray (Nassau, Bahamas) paced the Huskies with six points in the frame.

Gibson (Nassau, Bahamas) dropped 11 points in the second quarter as Saint Mary's outscored UPEI 23-19 in the frame and led by two at halftime, 40-38.

Emmanuel Ndatuje (Ottawa, ON) chipped in seven of his team-high 16 points off the bench for UPEI in the third quarter and Johnson (Lake Echo, NS) added eight points for SMU, as the Huskies outpaced the Panthers 26-20 in the third and led 66-58 after thirty minutes.

Donate Mitchell (Vaughan, ON) added eight points in the fourth quarter for SMU as Jamesley Jerome (Montreal, QC) scored six for UPEI and the Huskies controlled the frame, 23-14, and held on for the 89-72 victory.

Mitchell finished with 16 points for SMU while Gray added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Jerome added 15 points for UPEI and Magdi Tiea (Windsor, ON) had 11.

The Panthers drop to 2-8 in conference play and hit the road for a match-up with the Cape Breton Capers on January 18.

Saint Mary's, on a two-game win streak, improve to 5-5 on the year and play host to UNB on January 18.
