Axemen defeat Huskies 97-92 in overtime

WOLFVILLE, NS – The Acadia Axemen gave the Saint Mary's Huskies a chance to come back and win on Saturday night, but ultimately held on with a strong overtime to win 97-92 in their home opener.

Gabe Davignon scored six of his team-leading 23 points in overtime to help Acadia to their victory. Glen Cox added eight points in the extra period, as part of his 20 on the night, as a key player in pulling away from the Huskies.

Acadia held a narrow led at half, with the Huskies taking a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, which ultimately setup for the time game after four quarters as the Axemen regained their lead. Their largest lead was 14 points late in the opening quarter, with it ultimately changing 14 times in the game.

On the glass, Thomas MacDonald had a game-high 10 for the Axemen, matched only by Marc-Denault Gabriel of the Huskies.

Gabriel led the Saint Mary's offence with a game-high 24 points, also picking up the only double-double in the game.

Jayrell Diggs finished with 23 points, while starters Jonas Maerz and Tjark Lademacher were both in double digits, scoring 19 and 11 respectively.

Acadia now hosts Dalhousie on Wednesday night at home, while Saint Mary's travels to Cape Breton for a pair of games against the Capers next weekend.
