Huskies fall 5-2 to Varsity Reds

(FREDERICTON, NB) In AUS men's hockey action, the UNB Varsity Reds scored a 5-2 win over the visiting Saint Mary's University Huskies.  Alex Wall scored his first two goals of the season, leading the UNB charge and earning first star honours.

The Huskies opened the scoring at 7:28 of the first period, Steven Shipley beating UNB netminder Etienne Marcoux on Saint Mary's third shot of the game.

Less than two minutes later, with UNB on the power-play, Cameron Brace wired a shot past SMU's Marc Terriault to even the score.

At 13:38, Wall scored his first of the night, coming off the blue-line and lifting the puck over Terriault's right arm and into the net. The teams traded goals in the second period.

In the third, Wall came off the blue-line again, wiring a Peter Trainor pass by Terriault at 5:36.

"I just shot the puck and Phil(Maillet) had a great screen there and it went in." Francis Beauvillier rounded out UNB's scoring at 9:06… out-racing a SMU defender to a loose puck and sliding into the net.

Rob Mignardi, who had two assists in the win, was pleased with his team's five goal effort. We want to keep building for later in the season, so we're just training ourselves to never let up in a game, no matter what the score is."

Huskies head coach Trevor Stienburg felt his team gave UNB too many opportunities. "I thought they had momentum, because we had three kills in the first period," said Stienburg. "They're quick and some of our guys got their eyes opened tonight."

Saint Mary's record is 4-3 and their next game is Wednesday vs StFX at the Halifax Forum.
