X-Men Edge Huskies 4-3 to Advance to AUS Men’s Hockey Finals

(Halifax, NS) The Saint Francis Xavier X-Men defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 4-3 in game four of their best of five AUS men's hockey semifinal series Wednesday night at the Halifax Forum to not only advance to the finals, but also book a spot at the University Cup. The game was played before a crowd of 2029.

The Huskies wasted no time getting on the board first when Alex Cord (Toronto, ON) scored off a wild scramble at 0:41 to make it 1-0. Saint Mary's quickly lit the lamp again when Subway player of the game Matt Tipoff (Toronto, ON) tallied off a shot from above the circle that slowly fluttered its way into the net at 1:44 to give them a 2-0 lead. Saint Mary's increased their lead in short order as well when Tipoff got his second of the game by backhand rebounding a point shot through at 3:01 on the powerplay to make it 3-0.

The X-Men cut into the lead when KristoffKontos (Penetanguishene, ON) potted a marker off a one-timer from the circle at 8:05 on the powerplay to make the score 3-1. The X-Men made it interesting when Mark Tremaine(Dartmouth, NS) scored off a wild scramble at 15:57 on the powerplay to get it to within one at 3-2 after the first period.

In the second, the X-Men tied things up when Brad Cuzner(Glace Bay, NS) scored by intercepting a pass and putting it home from the slot to make the score 3-3 after two periods.

The third saw the X-men get the crucial game winner when Eric Locke (Toronto, ON) tallied off another one-timer from the circle at 10:51 to get the win, despite several Saint Mary's attempts to get the equalizer. 

The X-Men outshot the Huskies 37-34. Drew Owsley (Lethbridge, AB) made 31 saves to get the win for the X-Men. Cole Cheveldave (Calgary, AB) stopped 33 shots in goal for the Huskies. 

The X-Men will play the UNB Varsity Reds in the best of three AUS final, with UNB hosting game one this Monday at 7:00 pm. Despite the series loss, the Huskies also advance tothe University Cup as the host
