Brassard gets shutout against Tigers

(Halifax, NS) The Saint Mary's Huskies hosted their cross-town rivals, the Dalhousie Tigers in AUS men's hockey action on Friday at the Halifax Forum and came away with a 4-0 win.

The opening minutes of the game were fairly even, with bouncing pucks leading to a number of turnovers.

The Huskies opened the scoring at 10:38. A drop pass on their zone entry from Calder Brooks (Emerald Park, SK) was picked up by Aaron Berisha (Mississauga, ON). Dalhousie goalie Connor Hicks (Kanata, ON) got a piece of Berisha's wrist shot, but the puck trickled in blocker side. Austyn Hardie (Halifax, NS) also had an assist on the play.

Saint Mary's added to their lead at 14:17 with a shorthanded goal. Stephen Johnson (Moncton, NB) stripped the Tigers defence of the puck in the neutral zone. Coming in all alone, Johnson made a beautiful deke on Hicks and tucked the puck in backhand. Jake Coughler (St. Catharines, ON) assisted on the goal.

Dalhousie had a couple additional late power plays but couldn't score as the first period ended 2-0 for Saint Mary's.

The second period was characterized by lots of continuous stretches without whistles as the action went end to end with not much sustained pressure.

The Huskies had some late chances, but Hicks was solid for the Tigers and kept the score at 2-0 heading into the third period.

Saint Mary's scored their third goal at 12:36 in the final frame. Coming off the bench after a penalty kill, Hunter Garlent (Thorold, ON) picked up the puck right outside his blue line and scored on the breakaway. After faking backhand, he cleanly beat Hicks low glove side.

The Huskies added a fourth goal from Logan Denoble (Peterborough, ON), assisted by Berisha and Johnson, a few minutes later, and that would be the final score: 4-0 for the Huskies.

The Subway Player of the Game was Aaron Berisha, with a goal and an assist for the Huskies.

It's a short turnaround for the Tigers, who host Acadia on January 18. The Huskies host UdeM in their next game on Wednesday, January 23rd.
