Huskies secure second place

(Halifax, N.S.) – In their final home game of the season, the Dalhousie Tigers hosted cross-town rivals, the Saint Mary's Huskies at the Forum. The Tigers closed out their season on a high note, taking a 4-1 win on Saturday night.

Tough battles from both sides started off the evening, and the Huskies were the first to find the back of the net with a shot from the point by Dylan DiPerna (Nobleton, ON).

The Huskies kept the Tigers in their end for the majority of the period. Moving the puck around behind the net and out to the point for multiple attempts, but the Tigers defensive line and Reilly Pickard (Halifax, NS) stood strong.

The Huskies led 1-0 heading into the second period.

The Huskies, carrying momentum off their first period goal danced around the Tigers defence, controlling the play and sending four solid shots toward Pickard.

Countering that attack, the Tigers gained possession and Kelly Bent (Halifax, NS) was able to capitalize on the opportunity. A pass from Campbell Pickard (Halifax, NS) across the crease to Chandler Yakimowicz (Kingston, PA) for a shot that was deflected off of Bent's stick and into the open net to tie it up.

Within two minutes, the Tigers passed straight through the neutral zone to Andrew Shewfelt (Dartmouth, NS) for a shot attempt. The puck was deflected out front and Marc Terriault (Montreal, QC) was caught up on the opposite side leaving plenty of space for Josh Worthen (Dartmouth, NS) to tap home the easy goal to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

After back-to-back goals by Dalhousie the Huskies, looking a bit flustered at first, came back with energy and had a few solid chances in the Tigers zone, but Pickard stood tall once again.

The Tigers carried their 2-1 lead into the third period.

Bradley Latour took a penalty putting the Tigers on their third powerplay of the game, led to a face off in the Huskies zone. The draw was won back to Aiden Jamieson (Lindsay, ON), who fired a hard shot towards the goal that was stopped, but the rebound landed right on Colton Heffley's (Swift Current, SK) stick to tap it into the wide-open net left by Terriault.

A rough turnover in the neutral zone gave the Huskies the opportunity to set up a play from the back of the net out to DiPerna at the point for a booming slapshot that Pickard was able to just get a piece of and send out of play. 

After a Huskies turnover in the Tigers end, Shewfelt received a prime cross-ice pass from Heffley and sent a one-time shot into the back of the net, putting the Tigers up 4-1 five minutes into the third period.

The Huskies pressured late, but the lead was too much to come back from, and the Tigers finished their season with a 4-1 win. 

Colton Heffley, in his last year with the Tigers, was named Subway Player of the Game. Finishing with a goal and an assist in the win.

The Huskies will finish off their season against Acadia on Wednesday.
