Aigles Bleus edge Huskies in 7-6 barnburner

HALIFAX, N.S. - The Moncton Aigles Bleus outdueled the Saint Mary's Huskies in an offensive showcase, taking the 7-6 win on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre.

The Aigles Bleus struck first, as forward Maxime Boudreau (Cap-Pele, NB) opened the scoring with an unassisted powerplay goal just over two minutes into the first period, after Huskies goaltender Matt Welsh (Halifax, NS) got caught out of his net attempting to play the puck.

The Huskies responded with defenceman Jaxon Bellamy (Hampton, NB) wiring a wrist shot for a powerplay goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening frame

Just over two minutes later, the Huskies took the lead as forward Joel Bishop (St. John's, NL) scored a shot from the slot off a nice feed from defenceman Cameron Pound (White Lake, ON).

The Aigles Bleus outshot the Huskies 13-8 in the first period, but Welsh was solid in the Huskies goal with 12 saves.

The Huskies would add on to their lead just 1:49 into the second period, when Nathan Dunkley (Campbellford, ON) scored on a two-on-one after an interception in the Aigles Bleus zone.

Just over a minute later the Aigles Bleus would make it a one-goal game once again, as Nathael Roy (Levis, QC) was able to deflect a rebound past Welsh.

The Aigles Bleus then tied it up as Charles Edouard Drouin (St-Georges-de-Beauce, QC) scored a slick backhand goal on a breakaway to make the score 3-3, 11:14 into the second period.

The Huskies would regain the lead when forward Andrew Coxhead (Bedford, NS) sniped his ninth goal of the season to put the hosts up 4-3 with just over four minutes remaining in the second period.

But just 30 seconds later, Drouin would answer with his second of the period, as his attempt to pass on a two-on-one was deflected right back onto his stick, and he put it past Welsh to tie it at 4-4.

The Huskies would get the last goal of the wild second period, as captain Keith Getson (Bridgewater, NS) knocked home the rebound of a Charlie Dafonseca (Thornhill, ON) shot, for a powerplay goal to put the Huskies up 5-4 with just over two minutes remaining in the frame.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 16-14 in the period, with each team scoring three goals.

The Aigles Bleus would score three unanswered goals to begin the third period. Nathael Roy scored the first, and just 12 seconds later, Mika Cyr scored moments after the face-off, putting the visitors up 6-5.

With the Huskies on the powerplay and pressing for an equalizer, Cyr made an impressive solo play, intercepting a pass at centre ice and deking around a Huskies defender and beating Welsh high for his second of the night, giving the Aigles Bleus a 7-5 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Just 34 seconds later, the Huskies were able to capitalize on that powerplay, as Coxhead scored his second of the night, deflecting a Justin MacPherson point shot to cut the Aigles Bleus lead to 7-6.

Despite the high scoring night, the Aigles Bleus were able to buckle down defensively late, as goaltender Etienne Montpetit (Valleyfield, QC) made several quality saves, and the time ran out on the Huskies, with the Aigles Bleus taking the victory 7-6.

Moncton outshot Saint Mary's 9-8 in the third period, and took a 36-32 advantage in the game.

Aigles Bleus forward Charles Edouard Drouin was named Subway Player of the Game with two goals. Mika Cyr (two goals, two assists) and Nathael Roy (two goals, one assist) also had multi-point nights for the Aigles Bleus, and rank third and fourth (tied) in AUS scoring respectively.

Andrew Coxhead led the Huskies with three points (two goals and one assist), and is on a three-game goal scoring streak. Nathan Dunkley (one goal, one assist), Jaxon Bellamy (one goal, one assist), Joel Bishop (one goal, one assist), and Justin MacPherson (two assists) also had multi-point nights for the Huskies
