King scores twice as Huskies extend win-streak to five games with 5-1 win over Tigers

Saint Mary's forward Sam King scored two goals as the Huskies extended their win-streak to five games with a 5-1 win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night in Halifax, N.S.

The Huskies opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the game when captain Keith Getson (Bridgewater, NS) deflected a rebound past Dalhousie goaltender Connor Hicks (Ottawa, ON).

The Huskies extended their lead just under 14 minutes into the second period when Sam King (Hampton, NB) followed up his own shot with a wrap-around that beat Hicks to make it 2-0 Huskies.

The last minutes of the period saw the Tigers get a five-on-three powerplay when both goal scorers and Tigers Jackson van de Leest were sent to the box. Unable to capitalize the Tigers headed to the dressing room down by two.

Back and forth play started the second period. The Tigers power play line got an opportunity to go to work 6 minutes in, but we're not able to convert. A second power play was offered up to the Tigers when Huskies forward Jonathan Hampton (Richmond Hill, ON) went to the box. Finally in the dying seconds of the man advantage, van de Leest found the back of the net to cut the Huskies lead to 2-1.

Less than two minutes later, the Huskies restored their two goal advantage when forward Andrew Coxhead (Bedford, NS) deflected a Connor Olson (London, ON) point shot for his team-leading 12th goal of the season, making it 3-1.

The penalty box door had a workout in the third period with several penalties issued and two Tigers and two Huskies getting 10 minute misconducts. The end result had Saint Mary's on the power play and defenceman Jaxon Bellamy (Hampton, NB) was able to capitalize on a one-timer from the blue line to put the Huskies up 4-1.

With seven minutes remaining in regulation, King scored his second of the night as he tipped home a shot from forward Charlie Dafonseca (Thornhill, ON) to make it 5-1 Huskies. King was named Subway Player of the Game for his two-goal output.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 39-23, with goaltender Matt Welsh (Halifax, NS), stopping 22 shots for the victory.

The Huskies fifth straight win improved their record to 13-7-0 on the season. Saint Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting the UPEI Panthers at the Dauphinee Centre, with puck drop schedule for 7 p.m. GET TICKETS
