Huskies Men's Hockey announces three recruits to 2024-25 class

Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Tyler Naugler is pleased to announce the commitment of three recruits - Will Chisholm, Matthew MacDonald and Connor Trenholm - that will be joining the Huskies for the 2024-25 season.

"We are very happy with the quality of student-athletes that have chosen to come play for Saint Mary's University," said Naugler. "All three student-athletes are hard workers on-and-off the ice, and exemplify the standard that we have set for the Huskies hockey program. These three Nova Scotians will be key pieces of our program moving forward and we can't wait to see them on the ice next season."

Will Chisholm

A 5'10" right-shot centre from Lunenburg, NS, Will Chisholm joins the Huskies from the Yarmouth Mariners of the Maritime Junior Hockey League.

Chisholm serves as the Mariners captain, and leads the team with 40 points (17 goals, 23 assists) in 33 games played this season.

"We're excited to add Will Chisholm to our team. Beyond the quality of his hockey skills as a player, Will exemplifies what it means to be a captain, team first mentality, a leader in every way, both on and off the ice," says Huskies head coach Tyler Naugler. "Will is a hard worker and community leader, and fits exactly what we're looking for from our Huskies student-athletes."

Previously, Chisholm played with the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL and recorded 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) over 111 games between over two seasons.

"It has been a goal of mine to play university hockey, and to play it so close to home for an organization with such a strong reputation makes it so much more special," says Chisholm. "Can't wait to be a Husky next season!"

Described as a versatile 200-foot centre with a high hockey IQ, Chisholm is also a hardworker off the ice and was named the Gatineau Olympiques' Scholastic Player of the Month in February, 2022.

"Will has been a leader for us both on and off the ice," adds Laurie Barron, head coach and general manager of the Yarmouth Mariners. "Will is a great hockey player, but a better person and he exemplifies what it means to be a captain of the Yarmouth Mariners. Hard worker on the ice and a community leader off the ice."

Chisholm has already been taking classes of the Sobey's School of Commerce at Saint Mary's, and will continue his education on campus this fall.

Matthew MacDonald

A 5'10" left-shot winger from Halifax, NS, Matthew MacDonald joins the Huskies from the West Kent Steamers of the Maritime Junior Hockey League.

MacDonald has scored eight points (three goals, five assists) in just five games with the Steamers this season. He began this season playing in the QMJHL, where he appeared in 35 games with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar and Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, scoring 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists), and served as an assistant captain with the Drakkar.

Over a total of five seasons in the QMJHL, MacDonald appeared in 214 games for four different teams, recording 69 points (29 goals and 40 assists).

"Huskies hockey is excited to add Matt MacDonald to our lineup," says Huskies head coach Tyler Naugler. "Matt is a solid and complete 200-foot player, and his growth into the player he is today exemplifies the brand of Huskies hockey. His ability to play with pace and team-first mentality will be a welcome addition to our team."

MacDonald's hardwork continues off the ice as he was honoured by the CHL as the Gervais-Munger Award recipient for academic perseverance.

MacDonald will be studying at the Sobey's School of Commerce at Saint Mary's this fall.

Connor Trenholm

A 6'1" left-shot centre from Cole Harbour, NS, Connor Trenholm joins the Huskies from the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.

Trenholm has scored 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 41 games played with the Wildcats this season, while serving as an assistant captain.

Over a total of five seasons in the QMJHL, Trenholm has appeared in 259 games for three different teams, recording 115 points (40 goals, 75 assists). He has served as an assistant captain for each of the three teams he's played for - Cape Breton Eagles, Saint John Sea Dogs and Moncton Wildcats - and was a member of the 2022 Memorial Cup Champion Saint John Sea Dogs.

"I am very excited to be starting a new chapter at Saint Mary's University and for the opportunity to join the Huskies hockey program," says Trenholm. "I can't wait to get started!

Trenholm's hardwork continues off the ice as he was honoured by the QMJHL as the Moncton Wildcats nominee for the 2023 Marcel-Robert Trophy for Scholastic Player of the Year, and a two-time recipient of the QMJHL's Dr. Sylvain Simard Award, supporting students excelling in applied sciences classes.

"The addition of Connor to our lineup next year will add depth down the middle," says Huskies head coach Tyler Naugler. "Connor is another 200-foot player with exceptional leadership qualities, and is a responsible defensive minded player who I feel has an untapped offensive upside to his game."

Trenholm will be studying at the Sobey's School of Commerce at Saint Mary's this fall.
