Axemen top Huskies in season opener

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Third year striker Cooper Coats (Halifax, N.S) was the main feature in the Soccer Axemen's highlight reel with a three goal performance earning him the Subway Player of the Game honours.

With no scoring in the first half, Coats scored the eventual game winner 20 minutes into the second half.

Christian Oxner (Halifax, N.S.) kept the score to 1-0 stopping eight of 11 shots on goal but Coats went back to work at the 85 and 86 minute mark with two goals to give Acadia a commanding 3-0 lead in the closing of the second half.

A third year striker, Coats picked up three goals to added to his nine career goals.

"We expected them to sit deep and have a lot of players behind the ball and play the counter attack game", said Coats, "But we have some quality players that can move the ball around and that's what happened later in the game when we broke them down. That's when we started getting goals."

Oxner was named the Subway Player of the Game for the Huskies.

The Axemen host the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday. Both teams met in preseason play with a 10-0 lopsided win by the Acadia squad. Saint Mary's will try to regroup to host the Moncton Aigles Bleus on Sunday in Halifax.
