Huskies split with Memorial

(St. John's, NL) – The Memorial Sea-Hawks recorded their first home win of the season by knocking off the Saint Mary's Huskies 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at King George V Soccer Field in St. John's.

Memorial and Saint Mary's would battle to a 0-0 first half score with the Sea-Hawks outshooting the Huskies by a 7-2 margin in the first half, but they were unable to find the back of the net as Christian Oxner (Halifax, NS) made a couple of key saves for the visitors.

Play in the second half would continue to go back and forth between the two teams until Tareq Al-Bader (St. John's, NL) scored his first career goal to give the Sea-Hawks a 1-0 advantage.  Al-Bader's goal seemed to give the home side some confidence as they would continue to put pressure on the Huskies until Kyle Williams (St. John's, NL) added an insurance marker to give the Sea-Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The Sea-Hawks were able to hold onto the lead and win the game, which turns out to be very important as they push to secure a playoff spot.

Tareq Al-Bader was named the Subway Player of the Game for scorer the game winning goal for the Sea-Hawks.

(Game 2, St. John's, NL) – The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks by a score of 2-1 in Sunday afternoon AUS soccer action from St. John's, NL.

Memorial controlled much of the play to open the game, registering three early shots, but could not find the back of the net behind Huskies goalkeeper Christian Oxner.  However, in the 17th minute mark, it would be Sea-Hawks midfielder Sean Forrester (Brampton, ON) finding the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

The opening goal seem to wake up the Huskies and they controlled the play for the remainder of the half, outshooting the Sea-Hawks 13 to 5.  The Huskies were rewarded for their hard work when Alex Black scored in the 35th minute, firing one past Sea-Hawks goalkeeper Braeden Sheppard (St. John's, NL).  The teams would go into the break tied 1 to 1.

Saint Mary's continued to out-chance the Sea-Hawks in the second half, but the game would remain tied late into regulation time.  That was until Dominik Gorski found the back of the net after receiving a great ball from teammate Nolan Leeco in the 87th minute to give the Huskies the victory.

Alex Black was named the Subway Player of the Game for scoring one goal and registering a game high nine shots on net.
