Huskies Track & Field Season Opener

Huskies Track & Field Season Opener

Halifax, NS:  The AUS Track and Field season opener located at Canada Games Centre in Halifax, NS was the perfect time for the Saint Mary's Huskies to open up their season with some exceptional early season performances. There were a great number of events available for both the male and female athletes to compete in. Making the trip to Halifax were teams from STFX, UNB, the host Dalhousie team, various club teams from the region, and of course the Saint Mary's Huskies.

On the women's side for the Huskies first year athlete Katherine Short ran a personal best over 60 meters in a time of 8.93 which placed her 15th in a very exciting 60m event. The race was won by Shannay Beals from Dal in a time of 7.88. In the women's 1500 meter event Meghan Clarke from Saint Mary's won with an excellent time of 5:01.84, which shows she will be a force to be reckoned with during the AUS championships which take place in February/March of 2015.  Clarke also competed in the 1000 meter event placing 4th in a time of 3:13.41. The 1000 meter race was won by Michaela Walker from the host Tiger's in a time of 3:01.73.

On the men's side Greg Allen competed for the Huskies in a deep 300 meter field placing 11th and earning himself a well-deserved personal best in a time of 38.79. The race was won by Adam Lewis from Dalhousie in a time of 35.65. In the men's 600 meter event the first Huskie to cross the line was Greg Williams placing 5th in a personal best time of 1:28.12. The second year athlete from Enfield, NS shows great promise for the rest of the season by running a quick time in the early stages of the AUS Track and Field circuit. Also with a personal best in the same race was third year Ontario native Jagmeet Brar placing 10th in a time of 1:34.17. For the longest distance in AUS track; the 3000 meter event was won by Huskie John Kuto in a fantastic time of 8:34.22. Kuto was followed by fellow teammates Angus MacDonald, and Ian MacDonald who placed 12th and 13th respectively, each with a personal best time in 9:49.85, and 9:50.61.

Overall, it was a great day for Track and Field in Halifax with intense competition between all of the teams. It shows that the AUS conference is growing stronger and it will be interesting to see the results come championship time with numerous Huskies in the mix to earn medals and score points for their school.
