Huskies compete in Indoor Track & Field Championships

The Athletics Nova Scotia indoor track and field championships were the second indoor meet of the season for the Huskies. The meet was a great opportunity for athletes in the AUS conference to prepare for the McGill team challenge in Montreal on the 23rd/ 24th of January against top tier competition from the other CIS conferences.

In the women's 60 meter event the top finisher for Saint Mary's was Anissa Owen running the event in a solid time of 8.36 seconds to place 13th. The winner of the 60 meter event was Shannay Beals from Dalhousie in a time of 7.81 seconds. Owen also competed in the long jump event where she jumped 4.71 meters placing 5th. The first Saint Mary's athlete to cross the line in the women's 300 meter event was Jonneice Rigby in a time of 47.92 seconds. The winner of the 300 meter event was Shawna McKay from Dalhousie in a time of 41.46 seconds. In the women's 1000 meter event the best Saint Mary's athlete was Blessing Nwaigwe in a personal best time of 3:19.91, showing great form for the quickly approaching AUS championships. The winner of the 1000 meter event was Brittany Therrien from Halifast Athletics (club team) in a time of 3:02.72. The top Huskie in the women's 1500 meter event was Rylee Mezzerobba in a personal best time of 5:40.72. The winner of the event was Celia Peters from Halifast Athletics in a time of 4.38.47. 

On the men's side M'Kyle Rigby competed in a stacked 300 meter field placing 21st in a time of 40.47. The winner of the 300 meter event was Dan Brown from the University of New Brunswick in a time of 36.07. In the men's 600 meter event Drew LeFrank had an outstanding first race as a Huskie with a personal best time over 600 meters in 1:28.42. The winner of the event was Justin Blades from Halifast Athletics in a time of 1:20.63. In the men's 1000 meter event 5th year senior J.K. MacAdam had his first race in over a year finishing as the top Huskie in a time of 2:49.70. In the men's 1500 meter event John Kuto was the top Huskie finisher in an excellent time of 4:03.09.

First year Saint Mary's athlete Jonathan Peverille also competed in the 1500 meter event running an outstanding personal best time of 4:25.84. Peverille shows great promise for future years after being a key runner for Saint Mary's during the cross country season, and once again on the track. The top finisher in the 3000 meter event for the huskies was first year athlete Ian MacDonald in a time of 9:55.65. Third year pentathlon athlete Matthew Musoke competed in several events over the weekend. In the high jump event Musoke cleared 1.70 meters, well enough for third place. In the long jump event he placed 4th in a solid jump of 5.65 meters.

It was an excellent day for track and field in Halifax, with the level of competition growing stronger as the season progresses it should make for an outstanding Atlantic University Sport championship at the end of February.
