SMU Open/ AUS Relays - Track & Field Update

The weekend of February 7th/8th was a big weekend in AUS track and field. It started off with the SMU open on February 7th which offered a wide variety of events and competition. The SMU open was followed by the AUS Relay's on February 8th which offered the 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800 relay events.

At the SMU open 3rd year Huskie Meghan Clark had an outstanding race in the women's 1000 meter event in a personal best time of 3:08.39. The winner of the women's 1000 meter event was Celia Peters from Halifast athletics in a time of 2:51.96. SMU's top finisher in the women's 1500 meter event was Monique Muise who showed good form in running a personal best time of 5:25.52. The winner of the women's 1500 meter event was Emily Ferguson from Dalhousie in a time of 4:52.30.
In the mens 60 meter event 3rd year athlete M'Kyle Rigby ran a seasonal best time of 7.52 seconds placing him within the top half of the field. In the men's 300m event Greg Allen had a stellar race, sprinting towards a seasonal best time of 38.59 seconds. In the always exciting 1000 meter event 5th year middle distance athlete J.K. MacAdam ran a personal best time of 2:46.21. MacAdam seems to be looking sharp and coming into form in the later stages of the season. In the men's 1500 meter event 5th year husky Angus MacDonald ran towards a personal best time of 4:27.54. The top SMU athlete in the men's long jump event was Matthew Musoke with a jump of 5.60 meters, placing two spots behind him was 2nd year athlete Matthew Smith with a personal best jump of 5.08 meters. Musoke once again performed well in the 60 meter hurdles event running a personal best time of 9.06 seconds. In the final event of the day; the mens 3000 meter, John Kuto finished second overall in a seasonal best time of 8:30.44 which places him in very good contention for a top spot at the AUS championships.
 

The AUS relay meet was a last chance event for all the relay teams in the conference to record times before the AUS championships. The SMU womens 4x800 meter team placed 4th in an overall time of 10:38.64. Athletes on the women's 4x800 team were Meghan Clark, Monique Muise, Jonneice Rigby, and Blessing Nwaigele. In the men's 4x200 meter event Saint Mary's finished 3rd in a close battle with Dalhousie for an overall time of 1:40.59. Athletes on the men's 4x200 team were Greg Allen, Matthew Musoke, M'Kyle Rigby, and Preston Matthews. In the men's 4x800 meter event the huskies had a solid effort placing 3rd in an overall time of 8:24.77. The men's 4x800 team consisted of Drew LeFrank, John Kuto, J.K. MacAdam, and Jonathan Peverille. The relay events are one of the most exciting parts of track and field, and the huskies hope to prove to be medal contenders in all relay events during the AUS championships.

 

The next meet on the schedule are the AUS championships which take place at Udem February 28th/ March 1st.
