Huskies finish strong at AUS Track & Field Championships

Results

The 2-17/18 AUS Track and Field Championships were held on the weekend at the Université de Moncton. The Saint Mary's Huskies competed very well, with many top performances throughout the championships.

Day 1 of the championships saw Andrew Peverill and Jonathan Peverill finish 3rd and 4th in the men's 1000m, finishing with times of 2:31.63 and 2:32.36 respectively.

To cap off day one of the championships, the day ended with the men's 4x800m relay. The Huskies relay team, composed of Stephen Goodyear, Drew Lefrank, Jonathan Peverill and Andrew Peverill, captured the gold medal in the event. Andrew Peverill anchored the relay team and would dip at the line to beat the Dalhousie Tigers team by .2 of a second for an exciting finish. Their final time of 8:03.80 is a new Saint Mary's school record and is the first time Saint Mary's has won the men's 4x800m relay in AUS history.

Day two of the championships began with Kali Gee clearing 2.30m in the women's pole vault, to win the silver medal. Gee also recorded a personal best with the jump.

In the men's 600m, Drew Lefrank narrowly missed out on bronze by .04 of a second, finishing 4th in a time of 1:26.73.

In the men's 4x200m and 4x400m relay, the Huskies would finish 6th and 5th respectively to score points for the team.

To cap off the championships, rookie Andrew Peverill won gold in the men's 1500m in a time of 4:02.49. Brother, Jonathan Peverill finished 6th in a time of 4:07.12 to also score points for the Huskies.

At the Championships banquet, Andrew Peverill was awarded AUS Track & Field Male Rookie of the Year. Peverill finished the championships with two gold medals in the 1500m and 4x800m relay, and a bronze in the 1000m. Peverill will now represent the Huskies at the U Sports Championships in the 1000m and 1500m on March 9th and 10th at the University of Windsor.

The men's team finished in 5th place overall and the women's in 8th place overall. Congratulations to those who competed and thank you to our graduating student-athletes!
