Huskies finish strong at AUS Track & Field Championships
(Moncton, NB) The Universite de Moncton hosted th AUS Track & Field Championships on the weekend and the Huskies placed well, won some medals and awards, and also broke a 28-year-old record.
Andrew Peverill (2nd year) retained his AUS title in the men's 1500m by running an AUS championship record breaking time of 3:53.30. Peverill's time broke the 1991 record of 3:53.60 set by Olympian Joel Bourgeois.
Rookie Bhreagh Burke and graudating student-athlete, Jonathan Peverill were AUS major award winners as they were both the recipients of the female and male AUS Student-Athlete Community Service Award's.
Andrew Peverill also captured silver medal in the men's 1000m finishing in 2:39.96 alongside fifth-year athlete and brother, Jonathan Peverill, who claimed bronze with a time of 2:40.88
The men's 4 x 800 relay team also captured gold. Both Peverill's, alongside Stephen Goodyear and Kyle Caie, won relay for the second year in a row. The Huskies crossed the line in 8:03.49.
First-year athlete, Bhreagh Burke won the bronze medal in the women's 1500m, finishing in a personal best time 4:43.02. Burke also scored points for the Huskies with a 5th place finish in the women's 1000m.
Third-year athlete Ashley Murray broke her own school record in the women's triple jump with a jump of 10.65m and placed 5th overall in the event.
Huskies also got points from: Jack Fader (4th heptathlon, 4th 60m hurdles), Jonathan Peverill (4th 1500m), Gabrielle Walthers (5th weight throw), Tristan Sherman (6th shot put).
In the women's relays, the 4x400m team placed 4th (Sophie LeBlanc, Abby Dunn, Kelly MacInnis, Bhreagh Burke), and 4x200m team placed 6th (Sidney Kharma, MacInnis, Dunn, LeBlanc).
In the men's 4x200m, the SMU finished 5th (Jassin States-MacLean, Ian Wheeler, Sam Shaw, Matthew Carlton), and the 4x400m team placed 5th (Carlton, A.Peverill, Shaw, J.Peverill).
Saint Mary's will be represented at the U Sports Championships by Andrew Peverill in the 1000m, 1500m, and the 4x800m relay alongside Jonathan Peverill, Stephen Goodyear and Kyle Caie. The U Sports national championship is scheduled for March 7-9 at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
