Andrew Peverill Places 4th in 1500m event at the U-Sport Track & Field Championships
Four Saint Mary's Huskies qualified to compete at U-Sports Championships, hosted by the University of Winnipeg. Representing Saint Mary's were team captain and graduating athlete Jonathan Peverill who competed in the 4x800m relay on Friday evening. Peverill was accompanied by fellow 4x800m teammates Stephen Goodyear, Kyle Caie and brother Andrew Peverill who also competed individually in both the 1000m and 1500m events.
The track events kick started for the Huskies with the 1000m event held Friday. Leading into this event, Andrew Peverill was ranked 3rd behind Stephen Evans from the University of Ottawa and fellow AUS competitor Hudson Grimshaw-Surette from Dalhousie University. Right from the gun, Peverill put himself in a good position and was met with a lot pushing and shoving from fellow competitors and characteristic to the event. In a very tactical race, Peverill finished in 11th place in a time of 2:31.71.
Four hours after finishing the 1000m, Andrew again took the start line but this time alongside his teammates Jonathan Peverill, Stephen Goodyear and Kyle Caie in the 4x800m. Jonathan Peverill was the lead runner for the Huskies and had an excellent final race wearing the maroon and white. Jonathan put the Huskies in strong position surging and accelerating ahead of other competitors before handing the baton to Kyle Caie and Stephen Goodyear. Brother Andrew Peverill raced the final leg of the relay. The Huskies finished 11th in a time of 7:58.38.
In the 1500m race on Saturday, Andrew again took the line for his final race of the U-Sports Championships. Peverill was ranked 2nd behind Kevin Robertson from the University of Montreal. Peverill was aggressive off the line and was leading the pack of runners. Uncharacteristic to typical championship racing, Peverill kept the pace quick off the gun avoiding a 'sit and kick' finish. 600m into the race, Peverill was still leading a closely packed contingent of runners. With 400m to go, the pace quickened and Jack Sheffar from Western University took the lead. Peverill crossed the line in 4th place in a time of 3:52.78 missing out on the podium by a quarter of a second.
