HUSKIES CLAW THEIR WAY BACK TO A 58-52 WIN OVER VARSITY REDS

(FREDERICTON, N.B) The UNB Varsity Reds women's basketball team nearly handed the AUS top-ranked SMU Huskies their first loss in over a year, but the Huskies came back for a 58-52 win in the first game of Think Pink weekend.

Play started strong with the two teams determined not to give each other an opportunity to build up momentum. The game went into the second half tied at 26-all.

In the third quarter, the Varsity Reds came out flying and outscored the Huskies by 16 points to eight. SMU started to push back strongly in the fourth quarter, and a 19-point scoring streak in the last seven minutes of the game guaranteed they would come out on top.

Leading scoring for the Varsity Reds was Hannah Currie with 17 points. Currie suffered an unfortunate injury in the fourth quarter that had her sit out the remainder of the game. Grace Wade had the second most points for the V-Reds with 11.

Leading scoring for the Huskies was Angelina Carvery with 19 points. Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse dominated the rebound game with 10, including 6 defensive rebounds. 

UNB point guard Grace Wade said there was no denying that this was a frustrating game for the squad.

"They're the top team in the conference and we were up by a lot at one point and just had a weak fourth quarter, I guess, and let it slip," Wade said.

"We need to keep in mind that we had that lead against the top team in our conference," she added. "If we can build off that and make some changes from today, then hopefully we can get them tomorrow."

The Varsity Reds and the Huskies play again tomorrow at 1pm in the RJCC.
