Huskies split weekend series with Panthers

(HALIFAX, NS)—The Saint Mary's Huskies lost the back-end of a weekend series with the UPEI Panthers 58-46 on Saturday night from the Homburg Centre in AUS women's basketball action.

Kiera Rigby (Charlottetown, PE) paced all scorers with 19 points and shot 6 for 18 from the field in 37 minutes for UPEI.

Saint Mary's had an early 16-11 lead after 10 minutes and the Panthers' used a 16-7 second quarter score to take a 27-23 lead at the half.

The second half saw the Huskies outscore UPEI 16-15 in the third quarter as the Huskies chipped away at the Panther lead, 42-39 after thirty minutes.

UPEI used a 9-0 run in the final frame and outscored Saint Mary's 16-7 to pull away for the victory, 58-46.

Reese Baxendale (Sussex, PE) finished with 10 points for the Panthers and teammate Lauren Fleming (Sussex, PE) added six points and 12 rebounds.

Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON) led Saint Mary's with 14 points and added seven rebounds while Katrina Murrell (Markham, ON) had nine points and 14 rebounds.

Josie Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS) had seven points and teammate Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC) had five points for SMU.

Both teams are 1-1 early in the AUS season and return to action next weekend with UPEI traveling to 2-0 UNB Varsity Reds November 10th while Saint Mary's visits 0-2 Cape Breton University Capers November 10th-11th.

Tip-off for all games are 6 pm.
