SMU secures playoff spot with 55-46 win over StFX

Antigonish, NS – The Saint Mary's Huskies (10-5) defeated the StFX X-Women (1-15) by a 55-46 margin Tuesday evening on Coach K Court at the StFX Oland Centre. The victory was worth four points in the AUS standings for the Huskies who moved into sole possession of second place.

Saint Mary's were led by Subway player of the game Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON) who had a big double-double night, scoring a game-high 18 points, along with 14 rebounds.

Saint Mary's got out to leads of 16-10 after the first quarter and 28-21 at halftime.

A pair of Jasmine Cain (Halifax, NS) three-pointers helped pace the visiting squad in the first quarter. The X-Women held tight in the second quarter as they were only outscored by a point at 12-11.

The third quarter was another low scoring affair as both teams struggled to sink baskets. SMU outscored the X-Women 9-8 to hold a 37-29 lead after 30 minutes.

Wood scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half for the Huskies. They outpaced the X-Women by a slim 18-17 margin in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

The Huskies took advantage of their second-chance points, scoring 14 to the X-Women's two, although the home team had big contributions from their bench. Jessica Miller (Mount Denson, NS) scored 14 and Kim Kingsbury (Nepean, ON) netted 10 to lead the X scoring.

Jamie McCarron (New Glasgow, NS) added nine points for StFX, as did Samantah Minicucci (Mississauga, ON), along with eight rebounds. Katie MacIntosh (Barrie, ON) was their top rebounder on the night with 11.

For the Huskies, Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC) scored 14 points and had six boards, while Cain finished with 12 points on the night.

The X-Women have the upcoming weekend off and will return to AUS action on Saturday, February 17th when they host Memorial in a 6:00 pm game. The Huskies will be home to Acadia on Friday night, February 9th at 6:00 pm.
