UNB tops SMU 83-76 in women's basketball

(HALIFAX, N.S.)—Mikaela Dodig (Bolton, ON) scored 25 points on Saturday night in UNB's 83-76 victory over the host SMU Huskies in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

The Huskies led the pace 15-13 after 10 minutes and UNB outscored SMU 27-18 in a quick second quarter, en-route to a 40-33 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw the Reds outscore SMU 24-16 in the frame and UNB led 64-49 after thirty minutes.

The Huskies made the final quarter interesting down the stretch. Trailing 79-68 with 3:23 to play, SMU went on an 8-0 run to pull within three, 79-76 with 49 seconds left.

Dodig scored her only points of the quarter on two free-throws with 13 seconds and UNB held on for the 83-76 win.

Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) poured in 24 points, adding seven rebounds and five assists in the loss for SMU. The rookie guard's 38 minutes were the most logged on the night.

Ja'Yon Leak (Charlotte, North Carolina) added 13 points for UNB while Grace Simpson (Fredericton, NB) and Katie Daley (Fredericton, NB) scored 10 apiece.

Jada Yeo (Cornwall, PE) scored 14 points for SMU while Kendra MacKinnon (Pictou, NS) added 11 points for the Huskies in the loss and fall to 1-11 on the year.

UNB improves to 7-6 in conference play.

Both teams return to action next week with SMU at Acadia January 24 and January 26 while UNB hosts StFX January 25-26.

Tip-off for all games is 6 p.m.
