Seahawks take first game of weekend series

(Halifax, NS) In AUS women's basketball the Saint Mary's Huskies fell 71-80 to the visiting Memorial Seahawks at the Homburg Centre.

 

In the first of two weekend matchups, the Seahawks had a narrow 21-20 lead after the first quarter, and continued to build on their lead until the final buzzer.

 

Leading all scorers, Sydney Stewart (London, ON) with a game high 24 points and 6 rebounds.  She was followed by teammate Haille Nickerson (Grimsby, ON) with 17 points and 3 rebounds.  Brooklyn Wright and Sydney Ezekiel and Brooklyn Wright each chipped in 14 points.

 

For the Huskies it was Kendra MacKinnon (Pictou, NS) who lead the scoring for SMU.  She finished the game with 19 points and 9 rebounds.  First year guard, Alaina McMiillan added 15 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

 

Subway Player of the Game was awarded to top scorer Sydney Stewart. 

 

Turnovers were 17 for Memorial and 15 for SMU.  Memorial shot 75% from the free throw line, while SMU was 69%. 

 

The win ties Memorial for 5th place in the AUS standings with Dalhousie.

 

These two teams meet again tomorrow at the Homburg Centre.  Game time is 1 p.m.
