Panthers top Huskies 2-1

(Halifax, NS)  The UPEI Panthers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 2-1 in AUS women's hockey action Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Both teams went scoreless in the first period. In the second period, the Huskies quickly broke the deadlock when Mary Worndl (Kitchener, ON) scored in the slot at 0:22 to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The Panthers responded when Ashtyn Bartlett (Durham Bridge, NB) tallied with a hard shot from the circle at 4:09 on the powerplay to tie the game at 1-1 after two periods. In the third, UPEI when ahead early when Corneila Geib (Calgary, AB) potted a marker on a soft shot from the blue line that managed to find the net at 1:39, which turned out to be the game winner.

The Huskies outshot the Panthers 27-15. Subway player of the game Marie-Soleil Deschenes (Ile-Perrot, QC) made 26 saves to get the win for the Panthers. Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, NS) stopped 13 shots in goal for the Huskies.

The Panthers are back to action this Wednesday when they host the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues at 7:00 pm, while the Huskies' next game is this Saturday at home against the Saint Francis Xavier-X-Women at 2.
