Tommies top Huskies 4-1

(HALIFAX, NS) The St. Thomas Tommies defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies in AUS women's hockey action Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena, where it was both breast cancer awareness day and the Huskies' graduation game.  Thank to all that supported.  The Huskies raised $685.

The Tommies got on the board first quickly when Marina Sergina (Dmitrov, Russia) scored on a wrap around at 1:47 to make it 1-0. St. Thomas struck again when Emily Francis (Barrie, ON) tallied from the circle at 5:07 to extend the lead to 2-0. Saint Mary's got one back when Caitlyn Schell (Waterford, ON) potted a marker off a shot from the top of the circle that just snuck through at 10:41 to make it 2-1 after the first period. In the second period, the Tommies regained the two goal lead when Jessica McCann (Grand Bay, NB) scored off a point shot through traffic on the powerplay at 15:19 to make the score 3-1 after two periods. In the third, St. Thomas kept it up when Alisha Gilbert (Chipman, NB) tallied off a backhand in front at 13:25 to add some extra insurance.

The Tommies outshot the Huskies 23-22. Taylor Cook (Brantford, ON) made 21 saves to get the win for the Tommies. Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, NS) and Justine McIntosh (East St. Paul, MA) combined to make 19 saves in net for the Huskies.

Both teams are back in action this Saturday on the road. The Tommies visit the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues at 4:00 pm and the Huskies are away against the Mount Allison Mounties at 1:15.

Thank to all that supported the breast cancer fundraiser.  The Huskies raised $685.  The women's baksetball team is hosting their annual fundraiser on Friday, February 12 when they host Acadia and the volleyball team on Sunday, February 21st when they host MUN at 1 p.m.
