Huskies Edge X-Women 1-0 in Triple OT to Advance to AUS Women’s Hockey Final

(Halifax, NS) The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Saint Francis Xavier X-Women 1-0 in triple overtime in the third and deciding game of their AUS women's hockey semifinal Tuesday night at Alumni Arena to both advance to the AUS finals and clinch a spot at the CIS women's hockey championships.

Despite two disallowed Saint Mary's goals in the fisst the period ended scoreless but had a flurry of chances at both ends of the ice.

The second period also saw plenty of opportunities but again no goals.

The third also went scoreless with both teams frantically trying for that crucial go ahead goal as the game went into overtime.

The 10 minute four on four extra period solved nothing despite spirited play and desperate attempts to get that huge winning goal.

After a 2nd 20 minute period, both goalies put on amazing performances, putting up a shutout for a game and a half.

The third 20 minute overtime, saw the deadlock finally broken when Mary Worndl (Kitchener, ON) scored off a rebound in close at 1:39, with the assists going to Laura Polak (Bedford, NS) and Sarah Douglas (Whitby, ON), to end one of the most exhilarating and fantastic games you will ever see. For the X-Women, Jenna Pitts (Antigonish, NS) led her team with eight shots on goal.

The Huskies outshot the X-Women 42-34. Rebecca Clark (Keswick, ON) made 34 saves to get the shutout and win for the Huskies. Subway player of the game Sojung Shin (Seoul, South Korea) stopped 41 shots in goal for the X-Women.

The Huskies will play the St. Thomas Tommies in the AUS final, which will start on Friday at Alumni Arena.  Game two will go to St. Thomas Sunday at 3 p.m. and game 3 if necessary will be played Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m.
