Huskies win 2-1 over MTA

(Sackville, NB) The AUS defending champion Saint Mary's Huskies picked up a 2-1 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville on Friday night. For the Mounties, 2019 started the exact same way that 2018 ended, with a 1 goal loss to the league champions.

 

After a scoreless first period that only saw 6 shots by Saint Mary's and 4 shots by the Mounties, the Huskies were able to grab the advantage in the 2nd.

 

Thirteen minutes into the 2nd period Miranda Hatt gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead when she beat sophomore Mounties goalie Katie Mowbray. Mary MacDonald picked up an assist on the play. Three minutes later it was MacDonald's turn as she scored to extend the lead to 2-0. Shae Demale and Miranda Hatt drew assists on the play.

 

The score remained 2-0 until the Mounties got a goal from Maddy Koughan with just over 5 minutes left in the game. Sam Jarron and Abbie Wisener picked up assists as the Mounties cut the Huskies lead in half.  The Mounties would push for the equalizer late in the game but the Huskies were able to secure the win.

 

Ashley Forley made 15 saves on 16 shots for the Huskies will Katie Mowbray turned away 26 of 28 shots she faced in the Mounties net.

 

Both teams return to action Saturday,tThe Mounties travel to PEI to play UPEI at 4PM.  Saint Mary's travel to Fredericton to take on the Tommies.
