Huskies defeat Aigles Bleues 5-2 for fourth straight win

MONCTON, NB - Five different Huskies scored as Saint Mary's won their fourth straight game, defeating the Moncton Aigles Bleues 5-2 on Friday night in Moncton.

It was the Huskies who opened the scoring early in the first period, with forward Mary McDonald (Calgary, AB) scoring on a backhand shot from in front of the Aigles Bleues goal, just 6:14 into the period.

Just over two minutes later, Huskies star forward Shae Demale (Red Deer, AB) received a breakout pass from Lauren Papp (Brampton, ON) and broke in on goal, making no mistake to put the visitors up 2-0, 8:30 into the first.

The Aigles Bleues got one back several minutes later, with Cassandra Call scoring at 12:45.

But just over two minutes later the Huskies restored their two goal lead when forward Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) banged home a rebound in front to put the Huskies in front 3-1.

The Huskies fourth goal of the first period came with just over two minutes remaining, off a great individual effort by forward Ashley Penney (Lawrencetown, NS).

In the second period, the Aigles Bleues cut into the lead again, when captain Isadora Quirion scored a goal.

The Huskies would add an insurance marker midway through the third period when defender Maddy Corbett (Sydney, NS) wired home a one-time slap shot to make it 5-2, which would go on to be the final score.

Huskies forward Mary McDonald was named Subway Player of the Game with one goal and an assist, while Shae Demale also recorded a multi-point night (one goal, one assist).

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleues 27-16, with goaltender Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) stopping 14 shots for the win, while Moncton goaltender Audrey Berthiaume turned away 22 shots.

The Huskies fourth straight win improved their record to 17-9-1 on the season, third in the conference. They'll continue their New Brunswick road-trip on Saturday, facing off against the St. Thomas Tommies (8-17-2), with puck-drop scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Grant-Harvey Centre in Fredericton.

The Aigles Bleues loss concluded their regular season with a 11-17-0 record. They'll be the sixth seed in the AUS Playoffs, which will begin next week with schedule info to be announced.
