First year Buffie scores shootout winner as Huskies defeat Aigles Bleues 4-3 in home-opener

HALIFAX, NS- The Saint Mary's Huskies won their home-opener in thrilling fashion on Thursday night, defeating Moncton Aigles Bleues 4-3 in a shootout on Charlotte Buffie's tie breaking goal.

The Huskies start the scoring off early, with first year forward Charlotte Buffie (Winnipeg, MB) scoring her first AUS regular season goal unassisted on a two-on-one, her shot blocker side found the back of the net.

Just two minutes later, Huskies forward Aimee O'Neil (Glace Bay, NS) scored on a breakaway to put the Huskies up 2-0 just six minutes into the first period.

Midway through the first period, the Aigles Bleues responded with Valérie Hache (Shippagan, NB), scoring off of a rebound in front of the net to cut the Huskies lead 2-1.

Just 19 seconds later, Moncton's Émilie Lalancette (St. Andrews West, ON) scores her first goal of the season from a point shot tying the game 2-2.

As the final minutes of the first-period wound down, Huskies forward Jillian Duggan (Halifax, NS), looking to take back the lead, took a one-timer from a corner pass, hitting the crossbar, sending the teams into the first intermission tied 2-2, with the Aigles Bleues outshooting the Huskies 16-9.

The second period saw opportunities for both teams, with Moncton's Laura Tremblay (Québec, QC) all alone in the slot, receives a pass from behind the net but puts her one-timer just wide.

The Huskies had their chance to take the lead with forward Gillian Lapierre (Port Coquitlam, BC) taking a shot off of a tic-tac-toe play in the slot, but Annick Boudreau (Memramcook, NB) stood firm, keeping the game tied.

Just over halfway through the second period, the Huskies entered their second powerplay of the game, with defenders Abigail Mackenzie (Stellarton, NS) and Maddy Corbett (Sydney, NS) sending multiple point shots onto the Moncton net however, Boudreau was there to stop them.

The second half of the period saw the Huskies peppering the Aigles Bleues with chances however, it would be Moncton's Elizabeth Galipeau (Bedford, QC) shot off of a cross-ice pass, putting the puck past a diving Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB), to take the lead 3-2.

The Huskies kept up the pressure looking for the equalizer however, they would head into the second intermission trailing 3-2, with both teams at 27 shots.

It was back and forth in the early minutes of the third period, with Huskies defence standing strong as Madelyn McCleary (Swift Current, SK) blocked a point shot from Aigles Bleues's Maritza Labrie (Saint-Quentin, NB). Building off of the defensive play, Huskies forward Ashely Penney (Lawrencetown, NS) finds the equalizer off of Miranda Hatt's (Regina, SK) shot that hit the crossbar, and bounced to her in the slot, where she fired it under the pads of Boudreau to tie the game 3-3.

As the minutes ticked down in the third period, both teams had great opportunities to take the lead, with Huskies Erin Denny (Eskasoni, NS) firing a shot off of a two-on-two deep in the Aigles Bleues zone, but Boudreau was able to get there in time to keep the game tied. 

The teams closed out the third period and headed into the intermission tied 3-3, with the Huskies outshooting the Aigles Bleues 36-33.

The teams headed into a five minute three-on-three overtime period, seeing both teams having great opportunities. At just under two minutes left in overtime, the Huskies headed onto the penalty kill. The Huskies defence successfully killed off their penalty, with Hansen holding firm, keeping the game tied.

As the teams headed into a shootout, the Aigles Bleues outshot the Huskies 41-37.

Huskies forward Miranda Hatt was the first to shoot, beating Boudreau high. But Aigles Bleues forward responded with a deke to the backhand to beat Hansen. 

Huskies defender Maddy Corbett was stopped by Boudreau, and Hansen made a great save on Valérie Hache.

That's when first year forward Charlotte Buffie stepped up and calmly walked in before stopping on a dime and beating Boudreau. Aigles Bleues forward Maritza Labrie had a chance to equalize, but Ridleigh Hansen made a great save to secure the Huskies victory.

Huskies forward Charlotte Buffie was named Player of the Game, scoring the shootout winner as well as her first regular season goal on the night.

Annick Boudreau was fabulous in goal for the Aigles Bleues, with 34 saves on the evening, while Ridleigh Hansen stopped 37 shots for the overtime win.

The Aigles Bleues loss gives them a 2-0-1 record on the season. Moncton will be back in action Saturday night visiting the Mount Allison Mounties (0-2) at 7 p.m. in Sackville, NB.

The Huskies win gives them a 2-0 record, Saint Mary's will be back in action Saturday afternoon as they host the St. Thomas Tommies (1-1) 3 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre as part of Huskies Homecoming festivities. GET TICKETS
