Tigers defeat Huskies 3-2 in shootout

HALIFAX, NS – Dalhousie forward Mollie Power scored the shootout winner, lifting the Tigers to a 3-2 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Saturday night at the Dauphinee Centre.

The Tigers opened the scoring with a powerplay goal from forward Madison Wardle (Rockland, ON), putting the visitors ahead 1-0, 8:56 into the first period.

Saint Mary's was able to equalize seven minutes later, as forward Erin Denny (Eskasoni, NS) tipped in a point shot from defender Anna Barrington (St. John's, NL), tying the game at 1-1, 16:07 in the first period.

The Tigers outshot the Huskies 13-10 in the first period, but the two teams went into first intermission tied at 1-1.

Dalhousie retook the lead just 4:30 into the second period, with forward Emma Penner (Niagara on the Lake, ON) stuffing in a rebound past Huskies netminder Ridleigh Hansen, putting the Tigers ahead 2-1.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 13-7 in the first period, but Dalhousie goaltender Grace Beer (Oakville, ON) shut the door, and the Tigers took a 2-1 lead into second intermission.

Saint Mary's pushed for an equalizer throughout the third period, and with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, the captain delivered, as Ashley Penney (Lawrencetown, NS) redirected a point shot from Anna Barrington, tying the game at 2-2, 17:50 into the third period.

The rest of regulation and overtime solved nothing, and the two crosstown rivals headed into a shootout.

After both first shooters missed, Tigers forward Mollie Power (Bay Roberts, NL) lifted a shot over Hansen's shoulder, and Grace Beer denied a pair of Huskies shooters, securing the Tigers 3-2 shootout win.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 35-34 on the night, with Grace Beer stopping 33 shots for the win, while Ridleigh Hansen turned away 32 shots in defeat.

The Tigers win improves their record to 13-7-3-1 on the season. Dalhousie will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 8, hosting the St. Thomas Tommies (14-7-2-1) at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Forum.

The Huskies loss earns them a single point, but drops their record to 9-8-4-2 on the campaign. Saint Mary's will hit the road on Sunday, Feb. 2, visiting the STFX X-Women (17-3-1-2) at 3 p.m. at the Charles V. Keating Arena in Antigonish, NS.
