Cara Freeman named 2023 AUS Rookie of the Year, Second Team All-Star

Saint Mary's Huskies women's soccer forward Cara Freeman has been named the 2023 AUS Rookie of the Year, as well as a Second Team AUS All-Star.

A science student from Halifax, N.S., Freeman started in all 12 regular season games for the Huskies. She led the team in scoring with nine goals—the fourth-most in the conference this season—and 13 points.

Her nine goals scored marked the most by a rookie nationally this season.

This marks the first time in program history a player from Saint Mary's women's soccer has been named the conference's top rookie.

In addition to being named the AUS's top rookie, Freeman was also named an AUS second team all-star today.

Freeman will now represent the AUS as the conference's nominee for the U SPORTS rookie of the year. The most recent Atlantic conference players to take home the national award are 2023 AUS MVP Alliyah Rowe (in 2019), and Cara Freeman's sister and current teammate Erin Freeman who was named U SPORTS rookie of the year in 2018 while playing for the Cape Breton Capers.

The Huskies finished the 2023 season with a 4-7-1 record, good for sixth place in the AUS Standings. They will take on the Acadia Axewomen in the AUS Quarterfinal, on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. in Sydney, N.S.
