AUS Volleyball Day one results, Huskies go 1-1

(Halifax, NS)  The Saint Mary's Huskies went 1-1 on Friday as co-hosts of the opening AUS volleyball tournament this weekend at Dalhousie and Saint Mary's.

In the opening match, the Dal Tigers defeated SMU 3-2.

The Huskies won the first set 25-23 and Dal won sets two and three 25-19 and 25-20.

SMU took the fourth 25-22, setting up the fifth and final set.

The Huskies jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before ties of 6-6, 10-10 and 11-11.

The Tigers outscored the Huskies 4-2 down the stretch, taking the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.

Dalhousie's Mieke Dumont (Kamloops, BC) had 15 kills, while teammate Courtney Baker (Bridgewater, NS) added 10 for the Tigers, who had 47 team kills and 99 digs.

Erin Smith (Moncton, NB) added 13 kills for Saint Mary's while Kristina Adler (Brampton, ON) had 11, as SMU totaled 47 team kills with 97 digs.

Match two of the day, saw Moncton defeat UNB 3-0 with double-digit scores of 25-14, 25-11, 25-15.

Adora Rooyakkers (Port Hawkesbury, NS) paced UNB with eight kills while Maggie McLenahan (Oromocto, NB) added 13 digs for the Varsity Reds, who had 18 team kills and 40 digs.

Moncton was led by Christelle Bertin (Beresford, NB) with 10 kills while Catherine Guitard (Madrani, NB) added 17 digs for Moncton.

In the final match of the day, the Huskies swept UNB 3-0 with set scores of 25-14, 25-16, 26-24.

Robyn Anderson (Fernie, BC) led UNB with 10 kills while Kristen Burns (Mississauga, ON) added five.

UNB had 21 team kills and 37 digs, with McLenahan contributing 13 digs on the night.

Calgary native Anna Watt paced the Huskies with eight kills while Adler and Shelby Charlton (Strathroy, ON) each had seven in the win.

Saint Mary's had 33 team kills.

Hannah Stienburg (Halifax, NS) chipped in 10 digs for SMU, who as a team had 45 on the night.
