Huskies drop Moncton in three sets – Adler and Smith each with double-digit kills in win

(Halifax, N.S.)—The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus in three sets on Sunday afternoon, 25-17, 25-10, 25-21.

Erin Smith (Moncton, N.B.) paced all hitters with 14 kills on the afternoon for SMU while teammate Kristina Adler (Brampton, B.C.) finished with 12 kills.

SMU improves to 8-6 on the year and sit third in AUS standings with 16 points.

The first set started out tight as neither team led by more than three points, as the Huskies were up 10-8 early on.

Five quick points saw Saint Mary's up seven, 15-8 before a four point Moncton run trimmed SMU's lead to three, 15-12.

Another five point run put the Huskies up 20-12 as the Huskies went on to claim the first set 25-17.

The second set SMU jump out to a 3-0 lead and built up leads of 6-2, 10-5, and 14-9 before a seven-point run put the Huskies up 21-9.

Saint Mary's outscored Moncton 4-1 down the stretch, closing out the set 25-10.

The third set saw Moncton jump out to leads of 4-1, 7-3, 10-5, and 12-7 before a four-point SMU run had the Huskies clawing back down one, 12-11.

Both teams traded points in the middle of the set with ties of 13-13, 14-14, 16-16, and 17-17.

Saint Mary's took three points and built a 20-17 lead before Moncton trimmed the lead back to one, 22-21.

The Huskies ended the set on a three-point spurt and took the it 25-21 and the match 3-0.

Rachelle Lemoine (St-Boniface, MB) and Christelle Bertin (Beresford, N.B.) finished with nine kills each for the Aigles Bleus as Pascale Doiron (Caraquet, N.B.) had eight.

Moncton drops to 6-6, sits fourth in conference play with 12 points and hosts 3-12 Acadia January 27th at 7 p.m.

Shelby Charlton (Strathroy, Ont.) added nine kills for SMU.
