Huskies top Varsity Reds 3-0

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Saint Mary's Huskies scored a 3-0 straight-sets win over the UNB Varsity Reds on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies won with scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-13.

Maddie Clarke (Ottawa, ON) led the Saint Mary's effort with 14 digs and nine kills.

Kristina Adler (Brampton, ON) had 11 kills, while Hannah Duncan (Halifax, NS) recorded five service aces. Duncan was named Subway Player of the Match.

"They put up a battle. It was a good game. The first two sets were very close," said Duncan.

She says after those close sets, the Huskies got tough in the third.  "I think we served tougher," she said. "We made them pass, made them pass a couple zeros and just held them there and eliminated their offence."

Kieren Hume (Truro, NS) led the Varsity Reds with seven kills and nine digs.  Kelsey Bond (Bridgewater, NS) also had nine digs for UNB.  Paige Lehto (North Vancouver, BC) delivered 22 serve assists.

"We were focused on getting everything up and making every single point," said Varsity Reds first-year hitter Megan MacNeil (Hammonds Plains, NS), of UNB's first two sets.  She says bad habits crept in in the third and cost them the set and the match.

The Varsity Reds are 0-19, last in the conference. UNB hosts the Huskies again on Sunday, in the regular season finale for both sides. First serve is scheduled for 1:00pm.

"We've got to take a step back. Think about how today went, what we did good, and come back tomorrow and do things better, work harder," said MacNeil.
