Huskies top Seahawks 3-0 in first game of AUS Tournament

The Saint Mary's Huskies swept Memorial 3-0 in the opening match of the annual AUS women's volleyball tournament hosted this year by Acadia University.

 

Huskie outside hitter Lindsay Donovan posted 10 kills with a hitting efficiency of 0.400 and added seven digs in the win. Teammate Bethany Smith had a match high 11 kills with an astounding 0.556 hitting efficiency.

 

The Huskies led for the entire opening set and at one point had a 16-8 lead after an 8-1 run. Saint Mary's wrapped up the first game 25-17.

 

Tied at five in the second game, Saint Mary's pushed ahead to a 25-17 second set win.

 

Tied at 10-10, Sam Gill and Bethany Smith laid the lumber with two kills each to pull Saint Mary's out to a comfortable 16-10 lead and eventual third set 25-17 win and the match in three straight games.

 

Donovan was named the Huskies' Subway Player of the Game.  Katie Wagar was announced as the Sea-Hawks Player of the Game. Belle de Vries landed a Sea-Hawk high of six kills, while teammates Kaitlyn Kuchinka and Haley Oke each had five kills.

 

Memorial takes on Moncton tomorrow at 11:00 am at Horton High School, while the Huskies play at 1:00 pm against the host Acadia Axewomen.
