Huskies earn playoff spot with weekend sweep of Seahawks

(St. John's, NL) –  The Huskies won their third match of the weekend 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The first set started out slowly and the Huskies beat the Sea-Hawks comfortably 25-13. Belle De Vries from the Sea-Hawks gave her all on the court, securing 5 digs ad 3 kills, while the Huskies had a consistent first set and four of their players each acquired 2 kills.

The second set brought more of the same and the Sea-Hawks were unable to hold back the Huskies unrelenting attack. The Huskies won 25-12 with an impressive 14 kills and a team hitting percentage of .444.

Hannah Portraz from the Sea-Hawks started the third set with one service ace and proceeded to get an early lead for her team. This initial advantage lead to an intense and close game where the Sea-Hawks picked up the intensity and started winning vital points, eventually winning the third set 25-23. They shut down the Huskies with some crucial kills from Cecilie Dumaresque, Belle De Vries, and Catherine Smith late in the game.

The crowd came alive in the fourth set, cheering on their home team with renewed hope. The Sea-Hawks fought admirably but could not triumph over the Huskies, losing the fourth set 25-14.

The player of the game for the Huskies was Emilia Conlon, who finished the match with 1 kill, 31 assists, and 3 digs. Her teammate Bethany Smith also had a strong performance, recording 8 kills, 4 service aces, 4 digs, and 3 blocks.

From the Sea-Hawks the player of the game was Hannah Portraz, who registered 1 assist, 1 service ace, and 10 digs. Belle De Vries and Kaitlyn Kuchinka also had standout performances, documenting 9 and 7 kills respectively.

The Huskies have now secured the last playoff position and will be on their way to the AUS Championships in March. Meanwhile the Sea-Hawks play their last games of the season next weekend in New Brunswick facing UNB. You can watch the live action at AUStv.ca.
