AUS Cross Country Championships - Andrew Peverill & Bhreagh Burke win awards
(Halifax, NS) The AUS Cross Country Championships were hosted by Dalhousie University in Point Pleasant Park on Saturday, October 27th. With cool conditions and little wind, it created fast times in some of deepest fields assembled at AUS Championships.
In the women's 8km, Saint Mary's placed 6th with a score of 152 points. The Huskies were lead by first year Bhreagh Burke who placed 11th in 31:21 and was named AUS Female Rookie of the Year after being the first rookie in the AUS to cross the line. Following her was across in 32nd and 33rd places were Paige Roszak and Samantha Fader in 35:19 and 35:45 respectively. Rounding out the women's squad was Solana Purdy placing 42nd in 38:33, Beth Lorimer (46th/38:54), Sarah Polak (48th/39:17) and Emma Parsons (49th/39:52).
The Dalhousie Tigers won the women's title with a score of 37 points, with Michelle Reddy of the Tigers claiming 1st and AUS Athlete of the Year in a time of 29:23.
In the men's 10km, the Huskies placed 4th with a score of 100 points. The Huskies were lead by a 2nd place finish from Andrew Peverill who claimed the silver medal in a time of 31:53 and was named an AUS All-Star. Fifth year athlete Jonathan Peverill was the second Husky across the line in 18th with a time of 34:16, with first year Joe Stewart following in thirty seconds later for a 25th place finish in 34:46. Following him in was a tight spread of Huskies with Stephen Goodyear placing 28th in 35:03, Ryan Fraccaro (30th/35:26) and fifth year athlete Ian MacDonald (33rd/36:26).
The St.FX X-Men won the men's title with a score of 38 points, with Angus Rawling of the X-Men winning the race and AUS Athlete of the Year in a time of 31:33.
The 2018 U Sports Cross Country Championships are hosted by Queen's University on November 10th. The Huskies will be represented by Bhreagh Burke, Andrew Peverill, Jonathan Peverill and Joe Stewart. Good luck to these athletes and congrats to both the women's and men's team on a successful season!
AUS MAJOR AWARD WINNERS AND ALL-STARS
Following the races, participants attended an awards luncheon at the Four Points by Sheraton in Halifax. AUS all-star awards were presented to the top seven finishers in each race, and individual medals, team medals and the AUS championship banners and trophies were handed out.
AUS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARDS
The AUS athletes of the year were awarded to the individual AUS champions, Michelle Reddy (Sarnia, Ont.) from Dalhousie and Angus Rawling (Calgary, Alta.) from the StFX X-Men.
AUS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARDS
The winners of the AUS rookie of the year awards were Bhreagh Burke of the Saint Mary's Huskies who finished in 11th place with a time of 31:21.17 and Bryn Smith (Hampshire, United Kingdom) of the Dalhousie Tigers who finished eighth in 33:17.29.
