All-Canadian Peverill caps off cross country career with sixth place finish at U SPORTS Nationals

HALIFAX, N.S. - Saint Mary's Huskies cross country athlete Andrew Peverill (Lower Sackville, NS) capped off his university cross country career with a sixth place finish at Saturday's U SPORTS National Cross Country Championship, earning him first team All-Canadian honours.

Conditions were wet and windy at the Links at Brunello in Timberlea, N.S., due to Tropical Storm Nicole passing through the Maritime region.

The Huskies, co-hosting alongside Dalhousie, battled through the mud over the 8km race at The Links at Brunello golf course. With conditions proving to add another element to the race, the men's team ran well, placing 17th overall in the team standings with a score of 454 points.

The Huskies fifth-year captain Peverill led the charge for his team, placing himself in the top pack of 20 men for much of the first half of the race. As the pack maneuvered their way through the 2km loop, the group started to thin and Peverill soon found himself in a pack of 10 runners vying for the podium and top 7 (first team All-Canadian status).

On the last lap, Peverill pushed onwards, keeping pace with the leaders. As other runners started kicking for home, Peverill outkicked his competitors to finish sixth overall in a time of 24:47. Max Turek, from the McMaster Marauders, placed first in a time of 24:21, leading his Marauders to the men's team title with a score of 37 points.

Huskies teammates Rory McGarvey and Teagan Scott, who have closely worked together in a pack this season, continued to do so Saturday and greatly improved upon their results from last year's U SPORTS Championships. McGarvey crossed the line in 83rd with a time of 26:38, while Scott followed closely behind in 93rd with a time of 26:47. Also scoring for the Huskies was senior athlete, Joe Stewart, finishing in 151st (30:03) and second-year athlete, Elijah Ford, placing 156th (31:05).

On the women's side, the Huskies were represented by two athletes. Gael Cameron and Jacqueline Moore ran closely together throughout the race, with Cameron placing 144th (36:18) and the rookie, Moore, placing 147th (37:33). Glynis Sim of the UBC Thunderbirds took the individual gold in a time of 28:19, while the Laval Rouge-et-Or (49 points) narrowly edged out the Thunderbirds (50 points) for the women's team title, winning the championship by a score of one point.

Well done to the Huskies on a successful season and hosting of the U SPORTS Championships.
