(Halifax, NS( In Saturday afternoon, AUS women's hockey action, the Saint Mary's Huskies hosted the UNB Reds at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

 

With only 13 skaters dressed for the Reds, the game was tilted in the home team's favour right from the start. Three unanswered goals in the second period and one late in the third propelled the Huskies to a 4-0 win.

 

The first period was scoreless, as frequent neutral zone turnovers by both teams limited scoring opportunities. Saint Mary's led in shots 13-8 after 20 minutes of play.

 

The Huskies opened the scoring halfway through the second period. Aimee O'Neill (Glace Bay, NS) picked up a beautiful cross ice stretch pass in the neutral zone. Coming down the left wing, she put a shot into the top corner of the net on the glove side of goalie Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, BC). Kiana Wilkinson (Prince George, BC) assisted on O'Neill's first goal in the AUS.

 

After that, the Reds, starting to feel the effect of their short bench, couldn't stave off an aggressive Huskies forecheck. With six minutes to go, Saint Mary's was on the power play and a shot from the point bounced through traffic in front of the net before Ellen Laurence (Kentville, NB) grabbed it and scored. Brooke Murphy (Balla Philip, NB) and Taylor Keeping (Hackett's Cove, NS) assisted on the play.

 

SMU extended their lead again in the last few minutes of the second frame. Shae Demale (Red Deer, AB) was behind the goal line beside the Reds' net. She passed to Mary McDonald (Calgary, AB) in the slot, who fired a wrist shot high glove side to make it 3-0 in favour of the Huskies. Alexa McMillan (Edmonton, AB) also assisted.

 

The Reds started off the third period with two back to back power play opportunities. They had scoring chances, especially from Lillian George (Garden Village, ON), but couldn't get the puck in the back of the net.

 

With less than a minute to go, the Huskies scored again to seal the game. After some rough play in the corner, the puck popped out and Murphy scored a bar down goal, assisted by Keeping and Caleigh Meraw (Red Deer, AB).

 

O'Neill was named the Subway Player of the Game.

 

The Huskies are back in action when they host the Dalhousie Tigers on November 20th and the Reds play next on November 23 when they host the UPEI Panthers.
